West Side Story

West Side Story

Hi Lovies,

Since I was a kid, I loved to watch musicals. My mom took me to so many when I was young, it was our thing we enjoyed doing together. I can remember seeing Stephanie Mills play Dorothy in the musical The Wiz like it was yesterday. These memories will stay with me forever and keep a constant connection to my Mom. One of our favorites was West Side Story, whenever it came on we would make sure to watch it. Mostly for Rita Moreno because she represented Puerto Ricans in theater, especially for a time when there weren't many Latinos in that industry. She was one out of twelve to have won all four major annual American Entertainment Awards: An Oscar, An Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony. It's safe to say she was definitely an inspiration to many.

Of course our favorite part was the iconic scene when Rita Moreno as Anita is telling Bernardo that girls are free to have fun because they were in America. The girls break out into the infamous song and dance "I like to be in America"! I lived for those dresses that Anita's little posse wore, they were so me! Anita's was my favorite because of the ruffle bottom that you could shake and shimmy to make a statement. Her high kicks still give me chills as I her dress thrashed against her, showing off her legs. This dress totally reminded me of it, made me feel like one of Anita's girls on the rooftop, battling with their boyfriends trying to prove to them that America was better than Puerto Rico.

You couldn't tell me nothing while I was in this dress, it made me happy and all I wanted to do was kick up my heels and shimmy my dress like Anita. In a time when the world has been in quite a bit of turmoil, it's nice to have memories like the ones I have. Even if it comes from a simple dress like this one that reminds me of special moments shared with my mom of a wonderful musical.
