MS Walk 2013

MS Walk 2013

Hi Lovies!

My co-worker Rayna recently found out she has Multiple Sclerosis. MS is an inflammatory disease that affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other effectively. Nerve cells communicate by sending electrical signals called action potentials down long fibers called axons, which are contained within an insulating substance called myelin. In MS, the body's own immune system attacks and damages the myelin. When myelin is lost, the axons can no longer effectively conduct signals. Of course this came as a total shock to her. She's married with 2 young kids and is a very active person. This disease is definitely doing to change her lifestyle in many ways. She has been very vigorous about researching MS and has already started medication.

Our other co-worker Ashley thought it would be a good idea for us to do the MS Walk in her honor as a way to show our support for her. It's a 6 mile walk starting at the South Street Seaport, going over the Brooklyn Bridge, through part of Brooklyn and then back around to the seaport where the finish line is. We signed up and made a team called "Las Reinas" which means "The Queens" in Spanish  we also got t-shirts made with the team name. We managed to raise over $5,000 for the cause! It was a beautiful day and we had such a good time being together as a team and supporting one of our beloved co-workers. Here's a few pics from the day.

Until next time Lovies!!
